Lesson 19 Activity:Changing Your Inner Narrative

By Becky McBoom

Now that we’ve learned about reframing selfishness in abstinence as boundary setting, let’s work on identifying the boundaries that will help you stay abstinent for the rest of the course. If you decide to continue with abstinence after this course, you can reassess your boundaries at that time.

Below are some examples of boundaries that you can set. Write down the ones that sound helpful for you, and see if you can come up with any of your own! If you get stuck, try reading more about the different types of boundaries.

  • Places you are not comfortable going
  • People you are not comfortable being around if they are consuming alcohol
  • Requests for people bringing alcohol into your house
  • The type of behavior you will not tolerate from yourself or others
  • Time you will dedicate to supportive activities like going to a support group or therapy
